The Squarespace Series
I've been wanting to write a Squarespace post for a few weeks now. Really, I wanted to start a series months ago but never really knew what to write. After working on Teal's website and two other sites for friends in the last few months, I learned that just because I think Squarespace is a great and easy platform to use, it may not come easy to everyone else. I love helping people when it comes to their websites and so I thought it would be a good idea to share what I know on the blog. Now, I am by no means a Squarespace expert and I google a lot of things for my own site. However, I can still share how to use features that I know about and tricks that have worked well for my own site. That being said, I thought I'd kick off the series with a really easy and fun feature.
Adding your Instagram feed to your blog is a great way to share more of your life throughout your website. Instead of just having a linkable icon to your Instagram account, Squarespace has a feature that displays up to 20 images from your account at a time. I chose to put my feed in two different places. One is in the footer of the blog so that it shows up on every page and the second is on the blog's sidebar. More often than not, if a reader doesn't think your blog or website is interesting, they won't even get to the bottom of the page. Having my Instagram feed on my blog's side bar can help initiate more engagement on both my blog and on my Instagram account. Here's how you can add yours!
The first step is to connect your Instagram account to your website. Go into your setting's navigation and select Connected Accounts. Once you are taken to that section, select Connect Account.
A white box will appear with all of the accounts Squarespace has the ability to feature. Once here you'll select the Instagram icon. Next, an authorization for Squarespace to have access to your Instagram account will appear.
After you've granted the authorization, a gray box will appear with your Instagram settings. Make sure the Show Social Icon and Download Data bubbles are selected. This will ensure that wherever your social links on your site are listed, an Instagram icon will appear as well as Squarespace's ability to download the images from your Instagram account.
Now that you've connected your account to your website it's time to actually add the feed to your pages! Go back into the main navigation and select Pages.
After you've selected which page you want your Instagram feed to be on, go into edit mode on that page. I'll be showing you how I added my feed to the footer of my site so that it shows up on every page. Hover down the left side of the area where you want to insert your feed. Dark gray bubbles with a line connected to it shows where the feed will be inserted.
Side note: If you're new to Squarespace, that bubble and line will be how you add everything into the pages on your site.
Once you've found the place you want to insert your feed, select the bubble. A white box will appear and you will scroll down until you see the Instagram icon. After you've selected that icon another white box will appear and this is where you'll be able to control all of your Instagram features.
By selecting the Design tab, you change the way your feed is displayed (just like your gallery and summary options). I selected the Grid option because I wanted my feed to be in a straight line across the bottom of the page. From this tab you can also choose the aspect ratio, how many images you want shown, as well as other options.
I hope this post was helpful for those of you either just starting out with Squarespace or even if you just aren't that tech savvy. Don't feel bad! Everyone learns in different ways and one of those ways is visually. So here you go! A visual step by step for how to add your Instagram feed to your Squarespace site!
