Weekend Wrap Up

Happy Monday friends, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Mine was pretty good. I had been going a little stir crazy from being in the house most of the week so on Friday I decided to check out the state farmer's market. Being that it was the first farmer's market I've ever been to, I didn't really know what to expect. Of course, I knew there would be fruits and vegetables but I didn't know it would be as big as it was. There were over 20 vendor's there just selling fresh goods from their farms and at least 20 more just selling plants and greenery. Unfortunately, I only ended up buying one little a basket of peaches because it was close to closing time when I was got there. Quick tip: If you're visiting this farmer's market, the website says they close at 6pm, but most vendors start covering up their goods around 5pm. I'll definitely go back earlier next time. I won't check this visit off my summer bucket list just yet because I don't feel like it was a real trip where I could say I really experienced it.

Facebook and Instagram are proving to be incredibly useful tools when it comes to exploring a new city. While searching through events near me on Facebook, I found a pop-up shop that was happening on Saturday not too far at a cafe. I debated on going and then I realized, these are exactly the types of events that I want to go to. Not only is it getting me out of the house but a lot of these pop up shops held at places that are favorites to the local and the vendors are usually people who live right here in the community. I struggled finding friends in Charlotte other than my co-workers because I never really went out. I'm not a partier or drinker and so anytime anyone would suggest "going out" with them, it consisted of one if not both of those things. Hence, me not getting out much. Plus, not having a car doesn't help either.

I went to the pop-up shop at Sola Coffee Cafe and it was great. I'm so happy I went. The cafe is really cute and definitely a place I want to go hang out at often. There were about 20 vendors there selling all sorts of goods. All of them were local artists and their businesses ranged from selling soaps, to beer infused soy candles, to small canvas paintings, to photoshopped prints, to custom invites for weddings, to ceramic pottery. I bought some soap and a pair of super cute earrings. All together I think I only spent about $20 there but seeing as I don't have a job here yet, I have to be a bit frugal. I'm excited to come back for more events though. They happen every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm (in the summer), other seasons are from 10am-2pm.

While I was at the pop up shop, I got some other great information about what goes on in and around the city. At first glance, Raleigh doesn't really look like a place a very exciting place to live but they actually have a lot of activities. You just have to know where to look. I use Facebook to check for events and geo-tags on Instagram. Instagram recently made a cool feature where in the search section, you can see multiple insta-stories from the city you're currently in. I use the links within the stories to explore the city. Genius right?! This has helped me find new places in the city like the Neuse River Greenway Trail. It has a huge sunflower field I would have never known about! Plus, there are a ton of local artists. It kind of reminds me of Asheville but the downtown area isn't built up as well. Asheville's downtown in the bomb. But I like what this city stands for. Every thing seems to center around community and the locals are involved in a lot.

After getting back from Sola it was about 93 degrees so I went for a dip in the pool. I love that pretty much every apartment complex in North Carolina has a pool as well as other amenities. Our complex has a mini movie theater, gym, office/library for the residents, and a billiards/party room. I love it! That ended my saturday and I certainly can't complain :). Sunday was my lazy day. I cooked and watched movies and it was great. Let me know in the comments below how you spent your weekend!

XO, Jaclyn
