Understanding Your Equipment: Part 3 - Depth of Field

Instead of moving on to flash for this third part, I've decided to focus on depth of field. I know I talked about it already in the last two posts so this one will be much shorter. When your using depth of field, there are three factors:

  1. Aperture - See Part 1 & 2
  2. Focal length - The wider the angle of the lens the greater your depth of field will be at any given aperture i.e. 24mm. The longer your lens the more shallow your depth of field will be i.e. 100mm. So at f4 the depth of field would be far greater on the 24mm lens then on the 100mm.
  3. Camera to subject distance - The closer you are to your subject the more shallow your depth of field will be. The further you are from your subject the greater the depth of field will be.

That's it, Happy Monday!
